Waste Collection
Residents in west Cornwall will start using their new food waste, recycling and rubbish service from this week (01 July 2024) The service is aimed at reducing waste, increasing recycling and contributing to a sustainable environment for all.

Cornwall Council is introducing weekly food waste collections and switching to fortnightly rubbish collections across Cornwall area by area.  Residents in the third roll-out area of west Cornwall have received new food waste caddies and rubbish bins or protective sacks in preparation for the service change which starts today (July 1, 2024).  The area covers Penzance,  Marazion, Sennen, St Buryan, St Just, St Ives, Hayle, Helston, the Lizard and their surrounding areas.  This follows the launch of the waste collection rollout in mid and south east Cornwall earlier this year. West Cornwall residents are being encouraged to check their collection calendars posted to them or at www.cornwall.gov.uk/myarea to make sure they know which days to put out their food waste, recycling and rubbish.

The key elements of the new waste service now launched in west Cornwall are:

·       Weekly food waste collections
·       Fortnightly rubbish collections in a wheelie bin or protective sack
·       Fortnightly recycling collections in the current recycling bags and box
·       New collection days for most residents
·       Recycling collection week change for some residents

Pension Credit Pension Credit: Overview – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Before bills go up this winter, please encourage people in your area who might be entitled to Pension Credit to spend 5 minutes using the Government’s online Pension Credit calculator. They could be missing out on an average of £3,900 extra a year.

Pension Credit can provide vital support to low-income pensioner households. It is especially important now that it is linked to winter fuel payments.

Retirees could be eligible for pension credit if they are above state pension age and have an income of less than £218.15 a week, or less than £332.95 as a joint weekly income with a partner. Some pensioners think because they have savings or own their own home they wouldn’t get Pension Credit, but they may still be eligible.

Disabled people, those caring for someone, and those with housing costs could still be eligible even if they have more income or savings.

Not everyone is online, and a nudge from someone trusted in the local community or a loved one can be a powerful motivator. If you are talking to residents in your communities who could be eligible, or if you are talking directly to friends and family of people over State Pension age, please encourage them to see if they might be eligible.

Free parking in Cornwall Council car parks and Truro Park and Ride travel in December

It will be free to park in all Cornwall Council car parks and to travel on the Truro Park & Ride for three dates in December, including Small Business Saturday.

All Council pay and display and pay on exit car parks, as well as the park and ride, will be free on two Saturdays in December – 7 and 14 and on Monday 23.

The Council is once again supporting Small Business Saturday, a national initiative now in its 11th year, highlighting small business success and encouraging consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities.

Martin Worth, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for customers, said: “Small Business Saturday is a reminder to us all about the importance of supporting the high street and local businesses.

“And if you’re not able to make it to your local high street this Small Business Saturday, this year we’re offering two additional free parking dates in the run up to Christmas.

“You might take up the offer of parking for free in one of our car parks, but if you want to leave the car at home, our bus network continues to offer great value with single journeys costing just £2.

“If you’re planning to visit Truro on December 7, 14 or 23, our Park and Ride will be free with buses running regularly. With more than 2,500 parking spaces split between the Tregurra and Langarth bases, you can be reassured of finding a space!”

All Cornwall Council car parks are clearly branded, and there will be posters about the parking offer at charging points on the free parking day.

If the car park is one of the ‘pay on exit’ car parks, you should take a ticket from the entrance barrier as usual. When leaving the car park, please insert your ticket into the machine by the exit barrier. If you have only parked on the free parking day, the barrier will open to allow you to exit. If you have stayed for longer than the free parking day, any additional parking fee will need to be paid for before you drive up to the exit barrier.
